MESSAGE FROM CLUB CAPTAIN – MIFF

Please get on with your matches.

BETTY GUNN MIXED

Look out for lists up in the changing rooms for those who want to enter the Betty Gunn competition. Drawn mixed partners, playing match play on handicap, best combined nett each hole.

Be mindful that you will need to get on with playing these matches once the draws are up, as it’s pretty hard to get 4 people together to play. If you don’t think you can commit, maybe give it a miss.

Interclub/Pennants

18-hole Pennant - our team had a bye in the second round. Round 3, at home on 22nd February, the team of Tawera Williams, Lee Thomson, Danny Pierey, Steven McHardy, Jason Smith and David (Bubba) Mitchell won 8-1. Stunning result.

Fortunes were turned around a bit in round 4 on 8th March, when we lost away to Tawhero 6½ to 2½. Our team was Tawera, Lee, Jason (Miff), Nigel Pearson, Bubba and Jamie Smith.

Next came another home match up in round 5 against Palmerston North when the team of Lee, Steven, Nigel, Noel Coombe, Bubba and Miff won 6-3.

Round 6 which was to be played at home on 5th April was postponed due to the condition of the greens after coring not being up to Pennants at that time. A suitable date for the matches to be played could not be found in time, so the teams were obliged to take a tie, 4½ - 4½.

Our team had a bye on 12th April, round 7.

On 26th April, the guys travelled to play Feilding team at Feilding and lost 6½ - 2½ in round 8.

The team that day was Tawera, Lee, Steven, Nigel, Danny Pierey and Miff.

Round 9, 3rd May we were set down to play Tawhero here at home, but they defaulted, giving us 6 game points. The team would have been Lee, Steven, Danny, Nigel, Colin Wallace and Miff.

Last of the round robin was at Palmerston North playing the home team. The team of Tawera, Lee, Danny, Steven, Miff and Nigel won 5-4.

The team finished the D grade 2nd= with Feilding on 36 match points, their season finished, but good work, guys.

Marquis Shield: We are two matches into this year’s competition and have recorded a huge win of 14½ to 3½ over Martinborough at Eketahuna and a narrow 8-10 loss to Eketahuna here at home. Current placings are – Eketahuna 24½, Pahiatua 22½, Masterton 19½, Mahunga 15, Carterton 14 and Martinborough 12½. Hopefully, we can close the gap on our next round, which is on Sunday 8th June at Carterton vs Masterton. The team is: (Seniors) Danny Pierey, Steven McHardy, Nigel Pearson and Jason Smith, (Intermediates) Brett MacDougall, Mark Hemopo, Peter Bourke, David Mitchell and (Juniors) Mark Thomson, Sam Gordon, Brett Richards and Graham Thomson, best of luck, team.

Then coming up on 22nd June we play Mahunga at Mahunga, followed finally on 20th July at Martinborough vs Carterton. Best of luck guys. Note: The Mahunga round was postponed from Sunday 18th May to 22nd June.

Handicap Pennant. This pennant competition is due to start on Sunday 15th June. Selectors/Convenors are Jared Brock and Jamie Smith. Dates of play are Rd1 at Rangitikei vs Palmerston North, 29th June Rd2 Foxton vs Levin, 13th July Rd3 at Manawatu vs Manawatu Juniors, 20th July Rd4 Feilding vs Manawatu, 3rd August Rd5 at Palmerston North vs Foxton, Rd6 on 10th August is a bye for our team as we host the other teams, and Rd7 at Levin vs Feilding.

Monday Pennant Rd 1 at Marton vs Rangatira Blue, our team of Lisa Cotton, Pam Bisset, Steph Tisdall, Sally Dryland, Lynne Huddleston and Seona Ashton had a commanding 8-1 win. The same team played round 2 the following week at Wanganui vs Rangatira Pink, losing 3-6. Round 3 saw us having a bye on 10th March as we hosted that day. Round 4 on 7th April was at Manawatu where our team of Lisa, Steph, Sally, Lynne, Seona and Paula McCool had a narrow 4-5 loss to Palmerston North.

On 12th May at Rangatira our team had a good 6-3 win against one of the frontrunners, Marton. The team was Lisa, Pam, Steph, Sally, Seona and Lynne. That win got the team through to the semis, playing the top team of the other division. Alas, not to be, the team of Lisa, Pam, Steph, Deb Henricksen, Sally and Lynne lost 3-6 to a strong Feilding team and will now play off for 3rd and 4th against Manawatu at Rangitikei on Monday 9th. The team is Lisa, Pam, Steph, Sally, Seona and Trish Cuttance. Good luck, ladies.

Weekend Pennant our team of Colleen Daysh and Bronwyn Smith have won their way through to the finals on Saturday 14th June at Waimarino. They will play Wanganui. Previous results include a 2-1 win over that same Wanganui team at Rangitikei; a bye here at home on 9th March; a 3-0 win in round 3 at Foxton over Castlecliff Blue; a half at Feilding with Rangitikei Blue in round 4; and in round 5, the team had a 3-0 win over Feilding Green at Castlecliff. Topping division 1, we played off against the 2nd placed team in division 2 (Castlecliff) and the team of Bronwyn and Seona Ashton had a clean sweep 3-0 to progress to the finals. All the best for the finals, ladies. The team will be Colleen and Bronwyn.

Riverside Cup. The ladies are in the second year of contesting this Wellington (Wairarapa) interclub and have made it through to the finals 3 points ahead of our nearest rival, Eketahuna. The final round is at Martinborough on Friday 13th June, lucky for some, where we play the home team.  Team at this stage is Pam, Steph, Colleen, Sally, Seona and Raewyn. Winning results to date: 28th February vs Masterton at Pahiatua 3½ - 1½; 28th March vs Riversdale Beach at Eketahuna 4½ - 1½; 11th April vs Eketahuna at Carterton 3½ - 2½; 30th May vs Carterton at Masterton 5-1.

Ladies who have represented our club in this competition thus far include Pam Bisset (2), Steph Tisdall (4), Colleen Daysh (4), Sally Dryland (3), Raewyn Newman (3), Sue Ross (2), and Paula McCool, Pam Huddleston, Trish Cuttance, Lynne Huddleston and Seona Ashton have played once each, and we had an unfortunate circumstance when a player had to default at the last minute (in case you are counting).

This is an unplayable lie, you have 3 options, each with one penalty stroke – see Rule 19. Or play it as it lies, no penalty.

Here are two balls in the Blue Gums 9th hole bunker - after someone hasn’t used the rake. Do the right thing, guys. Two pretty pissed off ladies that day!
