Interclub/Pennants

Marquis Shield is done and dusted with our team placed second, 2 points behind Eketahuna who retained the Shield. Results:

Sunday 8th June the team won 12-6 over Masterton at Carterton.

On Sunday 22nd June they won 13-5 over Mahunga at Mahunga.

The team was Danny Pierey, Nigel Pearson, James Nisbet and Logan McHardy (Seniors). Brett MacDougall, Mark Hemopo, Lionel Toheriri and Brett Richards were our Intermediates, while our juniors were Mark Thomson, Tony Kerins, Todd McHardy and Jacob Smith.

In the final round on Sunday 20th July at Martinborough vs Carterton we had a 9½ to 8½ win. Not enough to take the lead, unfortunately.

The team that day was Danny, Steven McHardy, Jason Smith and Nigel; Brett Mac, Mark H, Peter Bourke and Brett R; and Mark T, TK, Todd and Graham Thomson.

Congratulations to all the players for a sterling effort throughout the season.

Handicap Pennant.

The team played 6 matches for 1 win, 2 halves and 3 losses. This doesn’t tell the full story, while they were down on the scoreboard, apart from the big loss to the Manawatu Wanganui Junior Rep team, their other matches ended in close results. We had players in the team having their first taste of interclub match play, well done to you all. The competition was held in two divisions and eventually won by Hawkestone. Results follow:

Rd1 at Rangitikei vs Palmerston North on 15th June, the team of Jared Brock, Brett MacDougall, Colin Wallace, Brett Richards, Jeremy Blatchford and Jason Kelly won 5-4.

On 29th June Rd2 Foxton vs Levin, the team of Jamie Smith, Logan McHardy, Brett Mac, Jeremy, Jason K and Phillip Rumpler lost 4-5.

Then on 13th July Rd3 at Manawatu vs Manawatu-Wanganui Rep Juniors the team of Jamie, Jason Smith, Brett Mac, Logan, Jason K and Phillip were beaten 2-7. Damn those youngsters!

Up next on 20th July Rd4 at Feilding vs Manawatu, our team of Jared, Logan, Jeremy, David, Jason K and Phillip had their second narrow loss 4-5.

On 3rd August Rd5 at Palmerston North vs Foxton, the team of Jared, Jamie, Brett Mac, David, Jeremy and Phillip cleaned up in the four ball, but their opponents came back at them in the singles, resulting in a tie.

After a bye at home on 10th August in Rd6, in their final match of the year, the team of Jamie, Jason S, Brett Mac, David, Jeremy and Phillip recorded another half with Feilding at Levin.

Monday Pennant

Rd 1 at Marton vs Rangatira Blue, our team of Lisa Cotton, Pam Bisset, Steph Tisdall, Sally Dryland, Lynne Huddleston and Seona Ashton had a commanding 8-1 win.

The same team played round 2 the following week at Wanganui vs Rangatira Pink, losing 3-6.

Round 3 saw us having a bye on 10th March as we hosted that day.

Round 4 on 7th April was at Manawatu where our team of Lisa, Steph, Sally, Lynne, Seona and Paula McCool had a narrow 4-5 loss to Palmerston North.

On 12th May at Rangatira our team had a good 6-3 win against one of the frontrunners, Marton, the team was Lisa, Pam, Steph, Sally, Seona and Lynne.

That win got the team through to the semis, playing the top team of the other division. Alas, not to be, the team of Lisa, Pam, Steph, Deb Henricksen, Sally and Lynne lost 3-6 to a strong Feilding team and playing off for 3rd and 4th place lost to Manawatu at Rangitikei on Monday 9th. The team was Lisa, Pam, Steph, Sally, Seona and Trish Cuttance. Good effort ladies, finishing in the top section of the competition.

Weekend Pennant:

Our team of Colleen Daysh and Bronwyn Smith won their way through to the finals on Saturday 14th June at Waimarino. They played Wanganui and lost in a tight battle 1 -2, the 4ball going to the 17th.

On their way to the finals, results included a 2-1 win over that same Wanganui team at Rangitikei; a bye here at home on 9th March; a 3-0 win in round 3 at Foxton over Castlecliff Blue; a half at Feilding with Rangitikei Blue in round 4; and in round 5, the team had a 3-0 win over Feilding Green at Castlecliff. Topping division 1, we played off against the 2nd placed team in division 2 (Castlecliff) and the team of Bronwyn and Seona Ashton had a clean sweep 3-0 to progress to the finals. Well done, ladies, while it was a disappointing to lose the final, you can be proud of your season.

Riverside Cup.

This was the second year of our club playing in this Wellington (Wairarapa) interclub and made it through to the finals 3 points ahead of our nearest rival, Eketahuna. Friday 13th June proved to be unlucky for our team as they succumbed 1½ - 4½ to the home side Martinborough. Our side was Pam, Steph, Sally, Paula, Raewyn and Mary Bollard. Unfortunately, Eketahuna recorded a 5-1 win that day to sneak past us by just half a point. Clearly our neighbours are proving to be the nemesis of our teams playing in the Wairarapa!

Winning results along the way: 28th February vs Masterton at Pahiatua 3½ - 2½; 28th March vs Riversdale Beach at Eketahuna 4½ - 1½; 11th April vs Eketahuna at Carterton 3½ - 2½; 30th May vs Carterton at Masterton 5-1.

But wait, there’s more! Finally!

There were two further Wairarapa interclub competitions that our ladies played in, and YES, won both trophies.

Rew & McCracken Trophy, a team nett competition was played at Riversdale Beach on Friday 1st August. With all the team having a good day, the combined nett of 386 was 7 shots ahead of 2nd place Eketahuna. Congratulations to our team of Pam Bisset, Deb Henricksen, Steph Tisdall, Sally Dryland, Raewyn Newman and Jo Bisset. You rock, ladies.

Cotter Rosebowl, our team of three pairs travelled to Castlepoint on Friday 5th September to play in this foursomes competition. Many of our team hadn’t played this course before but played well enough to win. I am told it was by a narrow margin, but hey, a win’s a win! Congratulations to Pam Bisset and Trish Cuttance, Steph and Raewyn, Sally Dryland and Sue Ross. Well done, all!

OTHER NEWS

Temporary Course: The lower holes of the course have suffered significantly over the past few weeks due to some horrendous spring weather. So that we can continue to get in 18 holes we have activated the Temporary course. You will need to select that when you get your card from the machine. This means the holes that are in play are 1 to 3, 10 to 18. 1 to 3 again and then 10 to 12. Follow the card and make sure you start marking the from the hole you start on according to the card. Thank you.

Bereavements: Sadly, over the past few months we have lost two esteemed and valued members.

Codge Hewitt passed away in July after a brief illness. Over the years she has been an integral part of our ladies’ days with her cheery smile and happy outlook, she will be missed. Alec Devonshire passed away suddenly last month. A man with a sunny disposition and a twinkle in his eyes, Alec will be missed by many at the club, especially the Thursday players. I have since heard that Alec’s partner Coleen has since passed away. Condolences to the family.

Defibrillator with thanks to the Hapori Programme and our ladies topping up the grant, this has been purchased and is in place just outside the ladies’ changing room. In the event you need to use this, DIAL 111 before accessing the unit. Power on and it will “talk” you through the actions required.

Congratulations to Tawera Williams who was selected for Manawatu-Wanganui team to play Wellington at Manawatu GC on 10th August. The team had a 5 ½ to 2 ½ win. Playing at number 5, Tawera squared his match. Well done.

Congratulations also to juniors Connor Woods and Sebastian Bambry who have both been selected to play in the Manawatu-Wanganui Junior Eagles tournament here in Pahiatua this coming Sunday 2nd November. Good luck, guys.

GolfNZ 2025 Women’s Home Links. A big congratulations to Trish Cuttance who is the national winner of both the Aotearoa Cup (Best nett Silver and Bronze divisions) and Veteran’s Trophy (self-explanatory) with an amazing 12 under score. Trish had a nett 61 on our Home Links Day. This day is scheduled throughout all the district associations in the country – hence home links. The club winner’s score is forwarded to (in our case) Manawatu-Wanganui and the best district score is then sent into GolfNZ who collates winners. Trish and another player from Taranaki tied their nett and had to go to a play-off for Aotearoa Cup. This is scheduled at the player’s next LGU day on their home course, ours which was on a day of wet weather, but Trish prevailed and won. Well done, Trish. (Footnote: Raewyn Newman won this same cup last season with the same score).

Also, not so prestigious, nevertheless, Colleen Daysh won the Manawatu-Wanganui Coronation Medal Home Links with a nett score of one under which was for the Silver division only. She finished 13th in the national ranking. The winner was 8 under.

Eagles: Congratulations also to Trish for being nominated and accepting her nomination to become our 4th lady Eagle. She joins our other lady Eagles Colleen Daysh, Pam Bisset and Pam Huddleston.

Purple Tees: The club has installed a purple tee course, essentially for juniors, but don't let that put you off, anyone can play them. If the machine has been set up to print a card for this tee, you can enter the score after play. Thanks to the McHardy family for preparing the tee markers.

Twilight has begun. As in other years, the month of October is free before competition begins in earnest on Thursday 6th November. Check out our Facebook page and our website for full details. Contact Steve McHardy on 021 320 228 if you have any queries.

Ladies 9 Hole golf: The programme for October and November for ladies’ 9 holes is posted on the Facebook and the website. Play is on Thursdays 9am to 11am.

She Loves Golf – Chip and Sip: A She Loves Golf event was organised on Fridays 10th and 17th October 5.30 to 7pm. Well done to Sue Ross and Mary Bollard for instigating this, and a special thanks to our members who joined in, making it enjoyable for those participating. Such is the success of the event; it is planned to continue Friday nights throughout November for the ladies who are interested. If you know anyone who might want to give golf a go, get them to contact Mary (0211320154) or Sue (0276870094).

New flags were received earlier this year, thanks to Jared Brock – Tararua Rural, Property Brokers. Proud to be here.

Junior Golf: (School holidays) our junior members didn’t have very good weather for their school holiday programme, although some pretty hardy youngsters hung in there on the first Wednesday. The programme will continue in the next school holidays which begin on Wednesdays sometime in December. Check out our Facebook page for more information nearer to the time. Thanks to all concerned.
